About the Course“A study of music culture of the region including the music of folk societies, popular artists, and classical musicians.” This semester, we will explore the history, sonic character, and cultural contexts of important genres of Afro-Caribbean music. We will pay particular attention to the sonic landscapes of Creole-, French, and English-speaking countries, including Haiti, Jamaica, and Trinidad, as we examine the interplay of musical practice, social identity, and power. Another recurring theme will be the role of music in sustaining transnational linkages between the Caribbean and the United States.
