A Few Musical Terms
Melody - an organized sequence of single tones so related to one another as to make up a particular phrase or idea
Rhythm - a particular succession of sounds and silences; the aspect of music involving the duration of pitches in time.
Beat – a steady succession of sounds equal in duration; a pulse
Tempo - the speed at which a musical passage is sung or played
Timbre - tone quality; the distinguishing "color" of a sound
Meter - a specific pattern of time values
Pitch - the degree of highness or lowness of a tone
Syllabic - one pitch per syllable of text
Melismatic - several pitches per syllable of text
Dynamics – the varying degree of loudness and softness in a musical piece
